Monuments of the landscape, 2013, digital print, 100 x 140 cm (individual print).
This body of work is inspired by the vast and monumental landscapes in United States which I encountered for the first time in December, 2012. These powerful landscapes, so unlike the ubiquitous spread of industrial and cultural environments previously known to me, provoked a sensation of sheer awe. I was able to obtain new forms by manipulating and further transforming my photographs into large-scale, abstract and two dimensional surfaces. They originate from a variety of natural shapes and textures. By employing a black background and printmaking translations, I invite the viewer to connect with the wordless power of the natural world. I hope to engage the audience in a meditative experience and examine our relationship with nature.
The series was awarded Murphy and Cadogan Contemporary Art Award for the best graduate students in Bay Area, 2013.
